General comments
Herpes stomatitis bij een kind jonger dan 6 weken dient beschouwd te worden als een neonatale herpesinfectie, zie advies aldaar.
Antivirale therapie bij herpes stomatitis heeft het meeste effect indien dit wordt gestart binnen 72 uur na aanvang van de symptomen, maar kan ook daarna mogelijk nog bijdragen aan een sneller herstel.
Indien de patiënt immuungecompromitteerd is, is het te overwegen met intraveneus aciclovir te starten en zo nodig de therapie te verlengen bij onvoldoende herstel.
